What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is an infection of your gums and the soft tissues and ligaments that support your teeth. It is one of the leading causes of adult tooth loss. Because it is a usually painless condition, most patients don’t even realize they have gum disease. Gum disease presents in two stages: the first stage, gingivitis, and periodontitis, the advanced stage.

Do I Have Gum Disease?

What Causes Gum Disease?

The most common cause of gum disease is poor oral hygiene. Without good at-home care, plaque and tartar build on the Good at-home care and brushing and flossing habits are the keys to preventing gum disease. However, some health and lifestyle factors can increase your risk of developing gum disease.

These factors include:

  • Puberty
  • Diabetes
  • Some medications, such as steroids, cancer therapy drugs, oral contraceptives, and certain types of anti-epilepsy drugs
  • Smoking cigarettes or chewing tobacco
  • Family history and genetics

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning procedure. Scaling removes plaque and tartar from below the gum line. Root planing smoothes the surface of the tooth root, helping the gums reattach to the tooth.

Root Surface Debridement

This procedure is similar to a scaling a root planing, using a special electronic tool. The tool emits ultrasonic vibrations to break up hardened plaque and tartar from the teeth.
